May Flowers and Butterflies

Recently #WrenFeathers published a pattern on her blog for April's May Flowers dress designed for the #OurGenerationGirl dolls.

I decided to give it a try.  So I chose a fat quarter with both flowers and butterflies on it.  After all it is still May and thus Butterfly Month although I may continue the them into June as I still have a few butterfly looks in the works that haven't gotten complete yet.  I was able to get the entire look from a single fat quarter, except that my skirt was only 22 inches wide instead of 31 like the pattern called for.

Although the pattern was designed for the larger #OurGenerationGirl dolls, with a few minor adjustments to the side seams and increasing the back overlap, I created a cute look for Alicia, my #JourneyGirl doll.

Up Sizing a Party Dress

A few months ago after posting my party dress for #heartsforheartsgirls, I received a request to make the look for #AmericanGirlDoll Grace and her girl.

While I don't have the girl's look done yet, as it takes measurements I haven't received.  I have made progress on the other look.

Two prototypes later, I have a pattern and two dresses my nieces will enjoy.

The first prototype was made in a purple flowered cotton.  The goal was to test fit of my first pattern draft, but when I was finished I was left thinking it looked cute on its own.

The second prototype was made in a pink cotton with butterflies on it.  The goal was to test the changes I'd made to the pattern.  It also turned out to be a cute dress, which left me thinking about putting velcro down the back and giving it to Hailey or Kayley

This got me thinking about the first prototype and if maybe I could hand finish the armholes and neckline and they could enjoy it as well.  In the process I ended up deciding to lower the neckline a bit more as well.

After all this, I think I'm ready to finally dig out the purple and sheer fabric.

Curious about the look?  Watch Flickr for pictures of both prototypes and the end result.  And watch SewDolledUp.blogspot.com for pictures of the end result.

Before long I hope to get the girls look drafted as well.

Cat's Meow Vintage Romper

For the first butterfly look of the month I have used a purple fabric with white butterflies and then belted it with a butterfly trim.

The pattern?  Cat's Meow Vintage Romper by #Forever18Inches on #PixieFaire.

The look is a square necked bodice with ruffled sleeves and full shorts.  The bodice is princess seamed and fully lined.  The shorts have a single pleat in the front lining up with the princess seam of the bodice.

There are two size options in the pattern, one for dolls with a waist smaller than 10.5 inches and one for dolls with a waist larger than 10.5 inches.

#OurGenerationGirl Anna is modeling this look.  She has a waist measurement of 11 inches, so I cut out on the bigger lines.

Mackenzie Dress with Olaf

Although I had planned to make May a month full of butterflies......butterfly fabric, appliques, etc, the Mackenzie Dress for #Hearts4HeartsGirls by #GenniewrenDesigns has published on #PixieFaire.

I loved this pattern in the #AmericanGirlDoll size (it is also available for Kidz N Cats dolls and A Girl for All Time, neither of which I have at present).  So when I saw the pattern for #Hearts4HeartsGirls, I couldn't resist.  I enjoy sewing for the smaller doll.

I did not even use a whole fat quarter even though I used the full skirt option this time.  Then with my niece in mind, I sewed an #Olaf applique on the bodice.  I ended up using a lace trim instead of the recommended piping.
