Flowered UK Holiday Top

To go with her new coat, we decided to make Kaylie the #LibertyJaneCompany UK Holiday Top and leggings.

The the top was cut from a fat quarter with a large flower design, despite the pattern being for knits as we didn't have a cute knit print available.  The neckline, sleeves and waist have elastic.  Our top ended up blousing over the elastic casing.

The leggings were cut from a red tank top we found on clearance.

Red Stratford Swing Coat

So Kaylie's birthday is coming up.  While planning what she might want for  her birthday, the #LibertyJaneClothing Stratford Swing coat was the freebie Friday pattern.

The Stratford Swing coat looked like a fun challenge so we chose a red fabric and sparkly red buttons as red is her favorite color.

This pattern is definitely not for a beginner. The coat has welt pockets, triangle seams, and pleats in the back.  All the fun details that make something cute, but difficult to put together.

1960s Ava Dress

Lately it seems like I'm getting very little sewing done around everything else.  Fortunately, the new Eden Ava Couture 1960s Ava Dress for #AmericanGirlDoll on #PixieFaire was a quick and easy pattern to put together.

I found a cute red and orange print in the fat quarters that had a bit of that 60s feel to it.  Then because I had only purchased one of the fat quarters, I used a red polka dot fabric for the lining.  Instead of doing a contrasting top and skirt, I cut both out in the print.

The dress features a sweetheart neckline, an empire waist and is sleeveless. It is also fully line and unzips down the back.

I put a red lace trim across the waist seam.  And then Ellie used the lace to create a headband.

We paired the dress with black tights and black shoes for the pictures.

High Low Keyhole Dress

When the girls caught sight of the high low hem version of Clarisse's Closet Keyhole Dress from #PixieFaire, they suggested with the right fabrics it would make a cute party dress.

After some discussion, we decided on a lavender satin for the main dress with a sparkled sheer overlay.  Then for the yoke and high low hem instead of doing a contrasting fabric, we'd use a sparkle netting under the sheer overlay.

The end result, a sheer yoke and a sheer hemline.

To pull this off, I deviated from the instructions slightly.  For the yoke, I stitched the keyhole section and the neckline with the facing to the right side of the sheer.   Next I turned the piece inside out.  For the lower section of the keyhole, I stitched the right side of the sheer to the wrong side of the satin.  Then clipped the seam, turned it to the inside and top stitched.  Then I stitched the yoke to the lower bodice and top stitched the seams and the top side of the keyhole.  I also stitched the right side of the sheer to the wrong side of the back piece at the neckline, clipped the seam and turned it inside. After top stitching the neckline, I was back in line with the pattern directions.

For the high low section of the skirt, I also adjusted the directions by stitching the netting to the right side of the sheer at the hem and then turning the seam to the inside for a cleaner finish with the sheer fabric.

After completing the lavender one, the girls decided instead they each needed one in their favorite colors.  So the process was repeated in pink and then in red.

Spring Fling

Now that my sewing room is almost put back together, I took on another test pattern for #welliewishers.

The Spring Fling dress by Di's  Dolly Designs on #PixieFaire is a simple low waist dress with petal sleeves.

I picked out a purple flowered print and white ribbon.

The bodice has a simple faced neckline.  The sleeves are edged with a white bias tape as I couldn't easily locate the correct size ribbon in my stash.

The skirt is an aline and attaches to the low waist line of the bodice.  This seam is accented with a ribbon belt.

Peach Keyhole Dress

As a change of pace from all the 14 inch doll clothes, I decided to try out the Keyhole Dress by #ClarissesCloset on #PixieFaire.

The dress features a keyhole opening between the yoke and the bodice.  For this look, I chose the mini skirt version.

I used a solid peach  cotton for the yoke and a print for the remainder of the skirt.  The entire look could be cut from a single fat quarter if desired.

I gathered the front bodice to 4 inches instead of the 6 in the instructions so it was a better fit for Alicia (#JourneyGirl Kayla).  To keep the gathers from stretching as I sewed I placed a pin on the wrong side of the fabric at each end of the gathers and wrapped my gathering threads around the pin.  This held the gather to my specific measurement eliminating the risk of the area stretching wider.

After the skirt was gathered to the bodice, I used a silver ribbon to create the look of a belt and add a hint of sparkle.

For the photos Alicia and I went out to the Monarch Cafe and she posed in front of the asters.

Emily's Picture Day Dress

As school was starting back up, the new Crabapples School Girl Dress for #WellieWishers was placed in the test queue.

It looked like fun, so I decided to do the Picture Day version.  This look has a pin-tucked yoke, two layers of skirt and the sleeves are banded.

Emily (#WellieWishers Camille) wanted to model the dress, so we picked out two different blue prints.  A lighter blue with dark blue flowers for the main fabric and a darker blue for the contrasting fabric.  Then we used white for the pin-tucked yoke.

While pin-tucking is not something I'm overwhelming confident of my skills in, the directions made it easy to get them correct and properly spaced.

And if the look wasn't complicated enough given I was working on it around the butterflies and audits at work, I decided to do the heirloom construction.  So inside my dress, you do not see a single seam.  If you don't have time to do a bunch of hand sewing, I recommend sticking to the standard construction.

I finished the look off with a butterfly charm as a broach instead of putting buttons on the yoke.
